Stressful Showering...

Is it just me, or is a hot, morning shower not so refreshing when your six-month-0ld is screaming bloody murder on the bathroom floor??

Shower time has always been easy. Supply Camden with a blanket and a toy or two, and he was content to play while I scrubbed, shaved and steamed. Emphasis on was.

Our new routine consists of mommy rapidly going through the motions, curtain two-thirds open, and repeating, over and over, "Camden, you're alright! Mommy's right here, baby!" and so on, and so forth.

What gives? What changed??

...is there a secret trick I don't know about? Help!!

Separation Anxiety? Everything I've read says it starts around 6-8 months when they start to have representational thinking. Which means that he can picture objects in his mind after they're no longer in front of him. Before it was the "out of sight, out of mind." I realize that you're barely out of sight... and sometimes not as you are hanging out of the shower, suds and all. But, he's with you all of the time, so even a little time without you will be a big deal for him. I did some reading on this when I was with Audrey because I just KNEW that she would SCREAM at some point when mom or dad left. She never actually did have much anxiety... she was always happy to see me, but who knows? I think they say that S.A. can happen well into their 3's. Well, there's my *so not a mommy, could be very off target* two cents!

so when adrien was little, i had to bring her high chair into the bathroom and give her cheerios while I showered. then i gave up. now i get up at the ass crack of dawn and shower before she wakes up. sigh. isn't it so glamorous being a sham!? :)

Is your heart set on showering in the morning? I shower at night. I understand this presents a wet bed head problem, but I've worked around that compliments of careful timing and a blow dryer. I don't know when Camden goes down or if Ryan is even consistently home in the evenings long enough for you to want to try, but it's a thought. Goodness knows I wouldn't appreciate my showers ruined by having to calm a screaming baby either!!

When Anthony started doing this, I decided to start showering right after I laid him down for a nap. I'd do it first thing, otherwise I'd get sidetracked, usually on here, and then not have a chance to take one. When he got older, I'd just set him in the shower with me and give him a few toys to play with. Now he either showers with me, something I want to stop doing since he's almost 2, or I take one while he's napping. I still don't feel comfortable just putting a movie on for him, although I have done it a few times. He'll grow out of it though. I'd also always remind myself that if Anthony cried for a few minutes it's not the end of the world. I could see him and he could see me, so we both knew each other were okay. Good luck... I know it's frustrating!

Cheerios in the highchair work like a charm for Critter. Sometimes I'll put him in the Pack n Play with several toys, that seems to keep him occupied pretty well also.

I started showering at nap time, too. Of course, now that I have both of them at home, I grab a shower whenever I can, which sometimes means I'm showering at 11 at night.

It also sometimes means I'm not as fresh as I'd like to be. Sigh.

looks like everyone else has already it but yep, that's MOMMYHOOD! what is a routine now, will NOT be a routine in a few weeks. that's just the name of the game, i've discovered. lol. i have to try to predict when kealani is going to wake up in the morning and then get up way before her to have myself ready before she's up for the day -- otherwise it's nearly impossible! especially since she's mobile!! good luck, you'll figure out what works best for you guys. =)

teehee - I make Anna or Nate entertain Amelia if I have to shower before her morning nap!!!! But yes, nothing worse that either trying to ignore a screaming baby while shaving or making yourself try (with no avail) to take your time and enjoy a long, steamy shower!
