My laptop is on the brink of death... help me!!
Something is wrong, and unless I position the power cord 'just so,' it won't charge... leaving me to rely on my VERY crappy battery.
Can I fix it somehow? Am I better off just paying for a new computer, given this one is... hmm... four years old? If I'm going to get a new one, anyone have a good recommendation for me? I don't want to spend a TON...

if you want a new one let me know. My husband's dad can get sweet deals from his friend at Sony. We got a brand new VAIO in November for $800 with pretty much every option.
Well the question is if it's the charger or the connection that the charger plugs into inside the laptop. If it's inside the laptop, fixing it pretty much requires tearing down the laptop and re-soldering (did I spell that right?) the plug back on. While I'm completely comfortable taking laptops apart, I'm not great with a soldering iron. If you were to pay someone else to do it, you'd be looking at a couple hundred bucks, minimum. Actually...a new power adapter might be in the $150 range anyway. I'm willing to look if you'd like. I like working on laptops. :) Just gimme a call. But if you decide to go new, Laura might have a good option.
Laura, ooohhh... a VAIO? Fun stuff! Ryan and I plan to do some 'looking' this evening and you might be hearing from me sometime soon. Thanks for the info.!
Shara, I'm about 99% sure it's the connection in the laptop itself. My mom had the same laptop up until about a month ago, and her charger didn't seem to work any better for my computer when I tried it. I'm at the point where I'm wondering if a nearly-four-year-old computer is worth a $200 repair? Doesn't seem like it to me...
I just had to get a new charger. I could tell because the green light on the charger would only come on when you wiggled the cord. That is as techie as I get. The new cord -$65 - works like a charm. I had a hard time without my laptop for 3 days! I had to sneak and use the boy's computer while he was in school!
Personally I have a really hard time throwing away hardware. But then again, I have more resources at my disposal to fix them when they go bad on me and infinite uses for yet another PC. :) But for you, it may not be worth it, especially if you can get a good deal. Like I said, happy to look if you care to even bother.
Shara... I might have you take a look one day, just for the sake of curiosity. My poor little computer is so slow and getting so old anyway... but still.
